VANCOUVER ISLAND HUMAN RIGHTS COALITION (VIHRC)
POSITION DESCRIPTION
Name of Position: Director at Large (several positions available)
Commitment: Up to 5 hours a month (approximately)
Location: Vancouver Island (virtual board meetings)
About VIHRC
VIHRC is a community-based, non-profit agency that helps individuals and
organizations uphold and promote human rights. VIHRC provides clients with
information and assistance bringing human rights complaints to the BC Human Rights
Tribunal, as well as letters of support, training, and education in human rights.
Responsibilities of Directors
- Attend monthly meetings and actively participate in Board deliberations.
- Support the development and promotion of VIHRC’s Mission, Vision, Values, and
strategic goals.
- Provide oversight on policy, finance, programs, personnel, and advocacy.
- Assist with administrative tasks such as fundraising, grant writing, and advocacy.
- Approve policies, budget, and staffing decisions as recommended.
- Participate in reviewing and updating bylaws, policies, and Board structure.
- Engage in financial oversight and ensure ethical decision-making.
- Actively contribute to at least one Board Committee.
- Support staff evaluations and community engagement efforts.
- Help foster positive relationships among Board members, staff, and the
community.
Requirements
- Meet the qualifications to be a board member as established in the BC Societies
Act (must be over 18, not an undischarged bankrupt, not convicted of a crime of
fraud, and must declare conflicts of interest).
- Must become a member of the Society, abide by VIHRC’s Constitution and
Bylaws, and remain a member in good standing for the duration of the elected
term.
- Good judgment and tact dealing with sensitive issues and confidential
information.
- Good analytical, problem solving and organizational skills.
- Work well individually and in a team environment.
- Experience working on nonprofit boards, finance, administration, communication,
and community engagement is an asset.
