Role Overview

We are seeking a seasoned Executive Director to lead the BCIT Faculty & Staff Association (FSA), a membership-driven, certified trade union representing full-time and part-time technological faculty and staff at BCIT. The successful candidate will drive the FSA's work, advancing employment interests and improving working conditions for its members.

The Executive Director will join a collaborative team of 9 professionals who strive to support a positive, inclusive work environment. They will foster relationships with stakeholders, including BCIT, government agencies, community groups, and labour organizations, to advocate for the FSA's vision, mission, and strategic plan.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Negotiate with BCIT on labour relations and administrative matters, leading the FSA in collective bargaining.
  • Advise the FSA Board during strategic planning and implement approved strategies.
  • Represent the FSA and negotiate on behalf of its members in various forums.

Stakeholder Relations:

  • Foster effective relationships with all stakeholders, including BCIT, government agencies, community groups, and labour organizations.
  • Represent the FSA to advance its vision, mission, and strategic plan.

Sector Knowledge:

  • Stay informed about threats and opportunities across sectors, including government, labour, and economic levels.
  • Monitor BCIT and external organizations for relevant issues, trends, and practices.
  • Presents issues of relevance from the FSA membership to the FSA Board and membership.

Critical Operations Management:

  • Collaborate with the Associate Executive Director to foster a healthy, respectful work environment.
  • Act as a catalyst to foster culture change towards responding to membership feedback and bettering service standards.
  • Balance leadership versus management activities to develop efficiencies and optimize strengths.

Strategy & Oversight: Labour Relations:

  • Develop and oversee a labour-relations strategy in consultation with FSA staff.
  • Represent the FSA Board and FSA members on matters of working conditions and negotiate with BCIT.
  • Advises the FSA's labour relations staff and approves grievance settlements and memoranda of agreements.

Strategic Governance Support:

  • Establish an effective working relationship with the FSA President and the FSA Board.
  • Execute the FSA Board's goals and priorities by consulting, strategizing, and delegating with the FSA staff.
  • Communicate effectively between the FSA board and staff team to ensure strategic alignment and encourage organizational cohesion.

The ideal candidate will possess a strong understanding of labour relations practices and laws, as well as experience in managing a unionized workforce. A post-secondary education related to labour relations practices and laws is preferred. The FSA offers a competitive salary range of $130,000 - $160,000 per year, extended health benefits, professional development opportunities, and a dynamic work environment.
